Lichen planus is a poorly understood skin condition. Its name is descriptive. It looks like lichen which grows on rocks and tree barks and planus is Latin for flat. Let’s understand this skin disease better.

What is lichen planus?

Lichen planus is a chronic disorder of the skin and mucous membranes. It is characterized by small, flat-topped, polygonal bumps that might amalgamate into rough, scaly plaques on the skin. There may also be the involvement of the lining tissues of the mouth and/or vagina.

How is lichen planus rash different from that of other common rashes?

Lichen planus can be distinguished from eczema, psoriasis and other common rashes purely based on its clinical appearance. Lichen planus lesions are small bumps or aggregations of bumps that are:

  • Flat-topped
  • Polygonal
  • Purple to gray in color

Lichen planus lesions tend to occur at the wrists and elbows and ankles. When lichen planus involves mucosal tissues like the lips or cheeks, these white web-like lines are easy to detect.

Lichen planus treatment in homeopathy

Homeopathic medicines for lichen planus help to treat the root cause of the skin disease. This provides a long-lasting effective solution to the skin problem along with symptomatic relief. Homeopathic medicines aim for the body’s altered immunity and bring it back to normalcy over a period of time. Homeopathy treatment helps to resolve existing lesions, reduce itching and control the further spread of lesions. Furthermore, homeopathic medicines are safe, free from side-effects as well as non-habit forming. Response to the treatment depends on various factors like the duration and severity of the ailment, general health and the extent of the spread of the disease.
