Male Pattern Baldness Treatment

Male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, is a common type of hair loss that affects both men and women. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 50% experience it by age 50. It starts with gradual hair thinning, usually starting at the temples and crown of the head. Genetic and hormonal factors are key contributors to its development.

The main contributor to Male Pattern Baldness is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone. DHT adversely affects hair follicles, causing them to shrink and resulting in a shortened hair growth cycle. Over time, affected follicles produce finer and shorter hair strands until they cease hair production altogether.

The progression of male pattern baldness often follows a common pattern, commonly assessed using the Norwood scale. Hair loss varies in severity. Some may notice a receding hairline, while others experience more extensive balding.

Family history and genetics links with Male pattern baldness. (without a family history, it is called androgenic alopecia). However, factors like age, hormonal changes, and certain medical conditions can also contribute to it.

Signs and Symptoms of Male Pattern Baldness

Androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern hair loss, is a common genetic condition causing gradual hair thinning and eventual loss. It affects both men and women because of androgens influencing susceptible hair follicles, eventually leading to hair loss. Signs of male pattern baldness may include:

  • Receding hairline

: Hair begins to recede from the forehead, typically forming an "M" shaped bald spot.
  • Thinning at the crown

: Refers to the hair thinning that occurs at the top or crown of the head.
  • Hair shedding increases

: One might notice losing hair and observe hair on pillows, in the shower, or when combing your hair.
  • Thinning of hair

: Hair strands become finer and shorter over time.
  • Widening part

: The part in the hair may appear wider because of decreased hair density.

These signs can vary in severity and progression from person to person. Consulting a hair doctor can help diagnose and discuss the best treatment options or remedies for any of the above or common sign and symptoms of male pattern baldness.

Causes of Male Pattern Baldness

  • Genetics

: The predominant factor contributing to male pattern baldness is genetics. If your father or grandfather experienced male pattern baldness, the likelihood of you encountering it increases. Genetic factors make hair follicles more sensitive to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a potent hormone. DHT gradually shrinks follicles, causing hair to grow shorter and finer until it stops growing altogether.
  • Age

: The onset of hair loss because of male pattern baldness begins in a man's 20s or 30s, although it can commence earlier or later. By the age of 50, 50% of men exhibit noticeable hair loss, with this number increasing to 80% by the age of 80.
  • Hormones

: DHT, as mentioned earlier, plays an important role in male pattern baldness. DHT is formed from testosterone by an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. Men with higher DHT levels or more sensitive hair follicles are more likely to experience hair loss.
  • Smoking

: There is some evidence suggesting that smoking may contribute to hair loss. Smoking can affect blood circulation, including that to the scalp, potentially impacting hair follicles. It may also contribute to oxidative stress, which can be harmful to hair cells.
However, the link between smoking and male pattern baldness is not as well-established as genetic and hormonal factors.
  • Post-COVID Effects

: Some individuals have reported experiencing hair loss as a post-COVID effect. Temporary hair shedding, also known as telogen effluvium, occurs after a stressful event like illness or surgery. In this condition, when treating the underlying cause, hair regrowth occurs. It doesn't directly cause male pattern baldness.

Certain elements may contribute to hair fall reasons in male, although we do not know their precise impact:

  • Medical conditions

: Conditions such as thyroid disease, lupus, and anaemia sometimes associate with hair loss.
  • Medications

: Some drugs, including blood thinners, beta-blockers, and anti-depressants, may induce hair loss as a side effect.
  • Stress

: Severe stress can result in temporary hair loss.
  • Diet

: A deficiency in essential nutrients like iron, protein, and biotin can contribute to hair loss.

Hair Loss Treatment for Men

Male pattern baldness is a common condition with various treatment options. Essentially, not all treatments work for everyone, and results may differ per individual.

Here are some common male baldness treatments available:

Medications & Topical Solutions:

Minoxidil is a topical solution that widens blood vessels and increases blood flow to your follicles. It may also stimulate hair follicles to enter the growth phase.

Side effects: Though approved by the Food and Drug Administration, its side effects include scalp irritation and dryness. Rarely, individuals may experience dizziness or chest pain.

Finasteride is an oral medication that resists dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone causing hair loss in men. It helps to reduce hair thinning and promote regrowth.

Side effects: Potential side effects include sexual dysfunction, such as decreased libido and erectile dysfunction.

Similar to finasteride, dutasteride inhibits the production of DHT, potentially offering a more comprehensive blockade of hormonal influences on hair loss.

Side effects: Side effects are similar to finasteride and may include sexual side effects.

Surgical Interventions

  • Hair Transplant

: A hair transplant surgery is done by removing the hair follicles. the hair follicles are from areas with hair, usually the sides or back of the head. Then, they relocate these follicles to areas with less hair or bald spots.
  • Recovery

: Recovery involves a healing period, with full results visible several months after the procedure. Potential side effects include swelling and temporary scabbing or in worse cases infection. A hair transplant is not recommended when you have active hair loss and for all types of hair loss. as the results will be undesired.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Procedures

PRP treatment starts with withdrawing blood from the patient. Next, the medical team processes the blood to concentrate platelets. Finally, they inject enriched plasma into the scalp to stimulate hair growth.

Recovery: The recovery process is quick, but optimal results may require multiple sessions. Side effects include minor swelling or bruising. It is not recommended for conditions like alopecia areata.

Note: It's important to consult a healthcare professional or specialist before trying any cure for male pattern baldness. Responses vary from person to person, Regular follow-ups are crucial to monitor progress and address any concerns.

Is it possible for me to re-grow my hair?

Yes. Male-pattern baldness is a condition which causes miniaturization (shrinking) of the hair follicle. This condition can, however, be reversed to some extent. This depends on certain factors like your age, the extent of hair loss and the underlying causes. Our doctors will carry out a thorough evaluation of your condition, and then guide you towards the right combination of treatment as well as the extent to which you can re-grow your hair.

There is a strong history of baldness in my family. Can it be prevented in my case?

Yes. Even though male-pattern baldness is a hereditary phenomenon, you can certainly be helped. The sooner you start with the treatment, the better are your chances of recovery. An integrated approach to the treatment as well as choosing the right combination of treatment for hereditary hair loss will certainly be of help.

I am 25 years old, and I’m losing hair rapidly. What treatment can I take to stop my hair loss?

Hair loss has become a common phenomenon among the youth. Since you are losing hair rapidly, the first goal of treatment will be to arrest excessive hair loss. After conducting a video-microscopic hair test and identifying the underlying cause of your hair loss, our doctors will then suggest the right treatment options for you. Mainly, the treatment would comprise treating the underlying causes along with a hair-vitalising treatment to control excessive hair fall.

I have noticed excessive hair fall after changing my place of stay. Can hair loss be linked to the water?

Yes. A lot of people complain about hair fall after relocating their place of stay. However, this might not be the only reason for your hair loss. A video-microscopic test to examine your hair, along with the detailed analysis, will show us the exact cause or a combination of causes for your hair loss. We will then treat you accordingly and try to arrest the hair fall.

I have noticed hair fall after a lot of stress. Is hair fall related to stress?

Yes. Stress is known to increase hair loss. There, indeed, are links between male-pattern baldness and stress. While you may work your way through relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation to control your stress level, homeopathic medicines can alter the reaction of the hair follicle to your stress, thereby preventing it from falling.

Myths and Facts

  1. Parlour treatments and shampoos can treat hair loss.
This is a myth. Hair loss is a medical condition that is caused by some underlying conditions such as thyroid disorders, anaemia, hormonal imbalances, etc. A parlour treatment or hair product will only be superficial, and it will certainly not treat your hair loss. Hair loss can only be treated by scientifically diagnosing the underlying medical conditions and treating them accordingly.
  2. Oiling the hair makes it grow thicker and longer.
This is a myth. Applying hair oil is a traditional and useful Indian practice, but it does not cause the hair to grow longer and thicker at all. Hair oil does not play a role in hair growth. However, oil can condition the hair and scalp, thereby making it smoother.
  3. Rubbing the fingernails of one hand against the other controls hair loss and helps with the re-growth of hair.
There is no scientific evidence to back this belief. The best recourse for hair loss is to consult a trichologist who will diagnose the cause of your problem and provide you with the best possible solution.
  4. Brushing your hair 100 times a day makes it grow faster.
Definitely not. Brushing only helps to spread natural oils over the complete hair strand. Excessive brushing may only add to your hair problems, thus damaging the hair due to excess friction.
  5. No visible hair loss means no balding.
It is not necessary that you go bald only if you notice hair visibly falling off. Male-pattern baldness causes militarisation (shrinking of the hair follicle). It also causes the hair to grow at a slower pace than normal. Very often, people miss the visible signs of their own hair loss, that is, when their hair starts to thin out and gaps between the hair become visible. This happens because the rate of hair growth in male-pattern baldness becomes slow. This needs to be treated medically, just like any other case of male-pattern baldness.
  6. If I shave my head off, will my hair grow back thicker and longer?
Shaving the hair has nothing to do with the rate of hair growth. Hair loss is caused by medical conditions and the underlying causes need to be addressed with appropriate medical treatment. With shaving, you only get rid of the hair, but hair follicles still continue to shrink.
