‘Laughter is the best medicine – unless you’re diabetic, then insulin comes pretty high on the list.’

If you’ve just discovered that you suffer from diabetes, then you probably have many questions and may feel some level of uncertainty. But you are not alone. There were over 72.946.400 cases of diabetes in India in 2017 (Source: International Diabetes Federation). Out of which, many cases of diabetes, especially diabetes type 2 go undiagnosed because the symptoms can be mild or absent.

Therefore, it is very important to know about diabetes so that it gets diagnosed as soon as possible before it progresses to complications like stroke, cardiovascular disease, damage to the eyes, chronic kidney failures, and foot ulcers.

For more details about diabetes, read on this blog:

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition in which too much sugar/glucose is found in the bloodstream. This usually occurs when there is not enough of a hormone called insulin available in the body or the insulin that is being produced does not work sufficiently well.

Insulin is produced in the pancreas and secreted directly into your bloodstream. It’s also quite smart, as it allows the glucose in your blood to enter the cells of the body, giving them ‘energy’ and so allowing them to function.

Common types of diabetes

Diabetes is often caused by either the body cells failing to respond adequately to the insulin produced or the pancreas failing to produce insulin. The main types of diabetes are:

Type 1 diabetes is caused by the failure of the pancreas to produce adequate amounts of insulin. This type of diabetes was previously known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes and its cause is not known.

Type 2 diabetes starts with insulin resistance. It involves a condition where the body cells fail to respond properly to insulin. As the condition progresses, lack of insulin may also develop. This type of diabetes was previously known as adult-onset diabetes or noninsulin-dependent diabetes and is largely caused by not getting enough exercise or obesity.

Gestational diabetes, the third type of diabetes occurs in pregnant women. It can occur without a history of diabetes.

The most notable warning signs of diabetes are:

  • Increased thirst and frequent urination: When the sugar levels are elevated in the blood it pulls fluid from the tissues which increase your thirst. When you drink excessive water it leads to frequent urination. This is seen in both types of diabetes.
  • Increased hunger: Without enough insulin to move sugar into your cells, your muscles and organs become depleted of energy. This triggers intense hunger. This is seen in both types of diabetes.
  • Unexplained Weight loss:  Without the ability to metabolize glucose, the body uses reserved alternative fuels stored in muscle and fat. Calories are lost as excess glucose is released in the urine. Hence this leads to weight loss in diabetes.
  • Excessive Fatigue: Glucose is the main source of energy for your cell functioning. If your cells are deprived of sugar, you may become easily tired and irritable. This is seen in both types of diabetes.
  • Blurred vision: If your blood sugar is too high, fluid may be pulled from the lenses of your eyes. This may affect your ability to focus and cause a blurred vision. This is seen in both types of diabetes.
  • Delayed Wound Healing: Diabetes type 2 affects your ability to heal wounds and resist infections. Women, in particular, suffer from recurrent vaginal yeast infections (candidiasis) and fungal infections in the groin area and under the breasts. A wound which takes more time than usual should raise an alarm for raised blood sugar.

These signs and symptoms of diabetes may rapidly develop in type 1 diabetes and may develop slowly and gradually for diabetes type 2. Hence, it is recommended that you contact a doctor if you experience any of these diabetes symptoms.

You can consult our homeopathic doctors for expert guidance over diabetes treatment. Homeopathic medicines for diabetes treat the illness gently without damaging the vital organs, unlike conventional medicine which is known to damage the liver and kidney.

If homeopathy is considered as a treatment option in the early stage of the disease, then the overall control of the disease in the future is much better.
