There has a been a great debate over whether human pheromones do play a part in attracting the opposite sex? Well, whatever be the result one thing is for certain that every human being has their own unique body scent like a fingerprint. Likewise, even the vagina has a typical smell and it is ok to have it. You read it right, it is considered normal to have a little typical smell to your vagina, but when the smell turns into a strong odour (mostly fishy) is when you need to get yourself diagnosed or it might lead to female sexual dysfunction.

The vagina cleans itself naturally and maintains its pH balance between 3.8 and 4.5, which is moderately acidic and considered normal. But if you notice a difference in odour or the color of discharge along with itching then you may have something fishy going on down there.

Here are some of the reasons that your vagina smells a little too much:

  1. Bacterial Infection: Bacterial vaginosis is one of the most common causes of vaginal infection. Women of fertile ages are usually prone to this bacterial imbalance. It means that there is too much of a certain bacteria present in your vagina which is disturbing the pH balance. It can be seen in women with a much active sex life, although it is not an STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection). The symptoms are a fish odor, especially after sexual intercourse.
  2. Diet: Multiple researches suggest that the food you ingest can affect the microflora and pH levels of your vagina to an extent. So if you find that that your natural smell has gone for a toss after you binged on something you shouldn’t have, then switch on to your normal diet and see if it helps. If the odour still persists, see a doctor.

  1. Yeast Infection: Another common infection where there is white and clumpy discharge, strong odour and may be accompanied by pain while urinating and itching. See your doctor if you have these symptoms.
  2. Bad Hygiene: Sometimes, bad odour can be a result of lack of hygiene. If you just have a fishy odour without any itching or discharge, then it may be due to lack of hygiene. Use a mild soap to wash the vagina and use clean cotton panties to keep the groin area dry.
  3. STDs: Sexually transmitted diseases like trichomoniasis, which is a parasitic disease is spread through sexual contact. The symptoms are yellowish discharge with a fishy smell with inflammation. The best way to prevent yourself is by using protection while having sex.

Treatment Options

If you have just a fishy odour with no other associated symptoms like discharge or itching then you can use some home remedies:

  1. Use a pH Product: There are many over-the-counter products available to restore the natural pH levels of the vagina.
  2. Use Water And Unscented Soaps: Don’t use the soap to clean the inside of the vagina as scented soaps can aggravate the problem. Use water and an unscented cleanser to clean the vulva.
  3. Use Probiotics: Try having probiotic foods which have good bacteria that can help in maintaining the bacteria balance in the body.

But, if the problem persists even after you try home remedies then don’t waste time and see your doctor or gynecologist immediately as the infection can lead to further problems like female infertility.
