I am not sleeping that great…

40year old Sujata suffered from a disturbed sleep. She was suffering from hypothyroid since 2 years and was on conventional treatment for the same. Though the levels of thyroid hormones were normal as per the recently done blood test, she was still very anxious as suddenly her sleep patterns were very vague. She would not get proper sleep at night and during the day she would be tired and fatigued all the time without much physical work as she had maids to do every work for her. She was afraid of taking conventional medicines for her sleep problems. Hence she resorted to homoeopathy. After a detailed case history she was prescribed homoeopathic medicines. She was also advised not to stop the conventional medicine as that could be tapered over a period of time. She was also advised some de-activation techniques which could help her to improve the quality of sleep.

Hypothyroid occurs when the thyroid gland fails to produce enough thyroid hormones. Hypothyroid is more common in women than men and the incidences increases with age. Blood test specific for thyroid hormones helps to detect hypothyroid.

Sleep disturbances are indicators of some thyroid problem. Both an underactive and overactive thyroid can affect your sleep habits.

Hypothyroidism can affect your ability to get a good night’s sleep in several ways such as suffering from night sweats, sleep apnea (pauses in breathing because of decreased lung function and weak respiratory muscles), insomnia and anxiety cause by abnormal thyroid hormones.

If you have a thyroid problem and are experiencing sleep disturbances, make sure to discuss your symptoms with your doctor. Sleep disturbances, left untreated, can lead to fatigue, decreased productivity, and mood changes.

Generally in conventional medicine a tranquilizer is given to promote sleep.  But the known side-effects of a tranquillizer are irregular sleep patterns, disorientation, confusion, restlessness, inability to relax, respiratory distress or arrest, cardiac arrest, gastrointestinal distress, unconsciousness or sedation. This medicine dosage could keep increasing and could form dependency. It could make a person addicted to it.

Homoeopathy for Hypothyroid

Homoeopathy helps to produce thyroid hormone naturally by stimulating the immune system and helps in better functioning of thyroid gland. Homoeopathy is free from side-effects. Homoeopathic medicine works by stimulating the body’s own healing capacity by encouraging the body to reactivate hormone secretion. ‘Stress’ which is one of the major trigger factors for hypothyroid is very effectively treated by homoeopathy.

If a person is taking conventional medicine for hypothyroid, they can continue taking the conventional medicine along with homoeopathy. Slowly and steadily when the thyroid hormones comes to normalcy the dose of conventional medicine can be tapered off.  Homeopathy helps to come out of dependence of conventional medicine and also saves from side-effects caused because of conventional medicines.
