Healthy habits to improve child immunity

Children are especially prone to colds, coughs and flu because they are around so many other kids all day. Parents are always looking for ways to boost their child’s immune system so they get sick less often. There are several ways you can do that. So, let’s take a look at some of them.

  • Get enough sleep

The easiest thing that you can do to help maintain a healthy immune system is getting enough sleep. When we don’t get enough sleep, we produce less cytokine and cytokines are a type of protein which targets infection and inflammation, effectively creating an immune response. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep consistently.

  • Moderate intensity exercise

Make your kid indulge in outdoor sports so he is physically active. Scientifically speaking, kids who indulge in physical activities have better functioning brains and stronger immunity.

  • Eating a healthy balanced diet

It is really important to eat right in order to maintain a healthy immune system. Avoid processed foods like biscuits, cakes, burgers, ready meals, which are high in saturated fats, high in sugar, high in salts, all which we know are notoriously bad for your kid. Give them unprocessed foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, unprocessed fish etc. Keeping a log of what your kid is eating will help you a lot.

  • Avoid stress

High levels of stress can actually dampen your immune system so you need to stress less at all times. Interact with your kids and try to find out what is worrying them. Talk about their day, their weekend plans, their upcoming exams etc. It will help reduce their stress levels and build a stronger immune system.

  • Practicing good hygiene

This is our first line of defence to keep germs at bay so it’s super important to follow good hygiene habits. Wash their hands often with soap for a minimum of 20 seconds. Squirting a little bit of hand sanitizer on the hands frequently will help a lot. Make them use a handkerchief every time they cough or sneeze. Tissues can be used as well and once you are done with the tissue, throw it in a bin straight away.

  • Take proper care of cuts/wounds

If there is a cut or wound, wash it immediately and put a Band-Aid on it. You don’t want to keep it open for long for the germs. Educate them about the items in a first aid kit. Demonstrate their use by creating imaginary scenarios so if your kid gets injured when you are not at home, he/she will be well-prepared.
