Male Infertility
September 3, 2020

Dear men, your infertility is in your reproductive capacity not a part of your self-esteem. Don’t feel insecure about it. Infertility in men is a medical condition. It doesn’t define your masculinity. Don’t let these notions keep you from speaking about it and seeking the professional help you need.

According to WHO, over 16.8% of men in India face infertility. In the last three decades, the sperm count has reduced three times. (NCBI) Even with a major prevalence in the country, talking about it is still a taboo in our country.

The common male infertility symptoms include problems with sexual functions, pain or lump in the testicular area, abnormal breast growth in men among others. The hormones control the production and development of the sperm.  The prime cause of male infertility is low sperm count or sperm motility. Some other causes of male infertility include:

  • Hormonal problems
  • Blockages or injuries in your reproductive organ
  • Sexual problems like erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation may not allow conception

Here are some changes to help enhance your fertility chances.

Diet changes

  • Include more antioxidants: According to a study done by Reproductive Biomedicine Online, men who consumed more antioxidants had less damage in their sperm as compared to men who didn’t. Include Vitamin E rich foods, such as nuts and oils in your diet. To increase zinc intake, eat oysters, red meat, poultry and crab.  Include fruits, vegetables, red peppers, kiwi, oranges and grapefruit to increase Vitamin C in your body.

Lifestyle changes

  • Maintain healthy weight: Check your Body Mass Index and maintain a healthy weight accordingly. Excess body weight disturbs your hormones leading to low sperm count. According to a study by Reproduction Journal, the complexity of hormones, body fats and other risk factors associated with being obese affects your sperm count. One way to increase sperm count is to maintain a healthy weight.
  • Toxic chemicals at the workplace: Certain occupations can affect your fertility. Men who work in fields or work as welders and metal workers in groups often have lower sperm count. This reduction is most likely due to the constant exposure to toxic chemicals.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking: Higher intake of alcohol and smoking results in lowered sperm count and worse sperm motility. In a study on 89 mildly smoking and drinking men, 37% out of them had compromised sperm counts. (Indian Journal of Pathology and Microbiology) Reduce the amount of alcohol and smoking if you want your sperm count to stay intact.
  • Avoid hot baths:Heat related sources such as hot water baths, bathtubs or even having a heated laptop on your lap, stress your sperm. The reason why male reproductive organ is outside the body is because it needs a temperature lower than the body temperature.
  • Frequent intercourse: Being sexually active throughout the month can help your fertility as well. Frequent sex with gaps of 3 to 8 days can help the production of your sperm. (International Journal of Women's Health and Reproduction Sciences)
