How effective are steroid creams for psoriasis?

Our body naturally produces steroids (hormones) to build muscle tissue and heal injuries. When the body is under stress due to a skin condition like psoriasis it produces extra steroids. However, in certain chronic cases, the condition may not be controlled by our natural steroids and may require treatment by a dermatologist.

Treating psoriasis with steroid

Pharmaceutical steroids are a man-made version of our natural hormones that help to reduce the inflammation and itchiness in psoriasis. Their strength ranges from mild to very strong. A dermatologist may recommend topical, oral and/or injected steroids for treating psoriasis.

Topical steroids: Steroid creams or ointments (topical corticosteroids) are commonly used to treat mild to moderate psoriasis patches on the body. The treatment works by reducing inflammation caused by the skin condition. Stronger topical steroids may be prescribed by your doctor.

Topical steroids have potentially harmful side effects that patients should be aware of before use. These side-effects include thinning skin, easy bruising, and changes in pigmentation.

Injectable steroids and oral steroids: Injectable and oral steroids are used sparingly for psoriasis because of their many side effects. They should be taken carefully as there are many risks involved. Side-effects of injectable and oral steroids include excessive hunger, fatigue, bone loss, poor wound healing, and acne.

Long-term use of steroid pills, injections, or creams could lead your body to stop producing natural steroids thereby creating a need to increase doses of these steroid medicines to heal psoriasis.

According to a research study published in The Indian Journal of Dermatology, topical mometasone corticosteroids can adversely damage skin and also cause skin conditions including telangiectasia, abnormal pigmentation, periorificial dermatitis, rosacea, skin atrophy, and striae.

Considering the risks and side effects, the use of steroids for treating psoriasis is not recommended. Instead of steroids, opt for safe and natural treatment options.

Managing psoriasis symptoms at home

  • Get a little sun: Spend some time in the great outdoors. The sun's ultraviolet B rays can help to heal psoriasis symptoms and slow down the rapid rate of skin growth.
  • Turmeric: Turmeric can help you to cut down your psoriasis flare-ups. It can be taken in pill or supplement form or as an ingredient in the food.
  • Aloe vera: Aloe vera gel or moisturizers can help in reducing redness, scaling, itching, and inflammation.
  • Stress-relieving activities: Stress is common to trigger psoriasis flare-ups. Finding ways to reduce and managing stress can potentially prevent your flare-ups or lessen their severity.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: Seeds, nuts, freshwater fish, and other foods with omega-3 fatty acids are known for their ability to reduce inflammation. This can help in managing psoriasis symptoms.

If your psoriasis condition is not manageable with home remedies and is affecting your well-being, we recommend consulting a dermatologist.

Psoriasis treatment in homeopathy

Psoriasis homeopathic treatment focuses on treating the immunological factors which cause psoriasis. Homeopathy heals the present eruptions and prevents the further spread and reoccurrence of this skin disease. Unlike steroids and other conventional treatments, homeopathy does not suppress the skin condition. It calms the symptoms and treats the root cause without causing side effects.

The selection of homeopathic remedies is based upon the theory of individualization. Homeopathy uses medicines made from natural ingredients that are suitable for any age group. These toxin-free medicines do not cause any dependencies and leave no side-effect even if the treatment is withdrawn abruptly.

According to a case study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a 41‐year‐old Indian male developed psoriasis on his whole body with a baseline 22.8 PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index) score. With classical homeopathic therapy, he achieved a 100% skin clearance indicator (PASI 100; showing complete skin clearance) in 3 months. His blood tests showed no inflammatory signs at the end of the treatment and for over 2 years the patient was monitored with no relapse.
