Do you have flat bumps on the inner forearm, wrist or ankle and inside your mouth? Well, you might have lichen planus which is an inflammatory skin condition. Keep reading to know more.

Causes of lichen planus

The possible causes of lichen planus include –

  • Reactions to dental fillings
  • Certain medications that are used to treat high blood pressure, malaria, diabetes and heart disease
  • Hepatitis C, a viral infection that causes liver inflammation
  • An autoimmune reaction in which the body’s immune system attacks your skin and mouth cells by mistake

Symptoms of lichen planus

Symptoms of lichen planus differ from person to person depending upon the severity of the disease. But the most common symptoms include –

  • Skin – The most common symptom is the shiny red or purple bumps on your skin which may itch. Fine white scales or lines may appear on your wrist, back, arms and ankles. Thick scaly patches can appear on your ankles or shins. Dark skin patches may replace skin bumps.
  • Mouth – Lacy patches of tiny white dots are seen inside your mouth. In severe cases, sores and redness may develop.
  • Nails – Thinning, splitting, nail loss, and ridges are the signs of this condition.
  • Scalp – Tiny bumps, irritation, and redness can form on your scalp. Hair loss and hair thinning may occur.

Genitals – Lichen planus in the genital area can cause purplish, flat bumps.

It is therefore imperative to consult a doctor before symptoms get worse.

Conventional treatment options for lichen planus

Corticosteroids for lichen planus are commonly prescribed over-the-counter medications for pain and inflammation relief. But the common side-effects of corticosteroid creams or ointments include skin irritation or skin thinning. If the skin condition does not respond to corticosteroids well, some prescribe a retinoid medication. But retinoids can cause birth defects. Hence, these medications are not recommended for pregnant women or those looking to get pregnant.

Homeopathy for lichen planus

Homeopathy is the safest treatment option for lichen planus as it has zero side effects. It primarily focuses on controlling the spread of skin disease with a reduction in lesions. It provides long-lasting results. It prevents future relapses of skin disease.
