Are you having a hard time trying to get pregnant? Or is your metabolic system messed up to a point where you have become obese? If you are facing similar situations, chances are that you might be suffering from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, commonly known as PCOS. It is a condition which affects the functioning of your ovaries. Women having PCOS are bound to generate higher amounts of hormones than usual which affect their menstrual cycle and may affect their fertility as well. The androgen is the prime hormone known to be the culprit which is a male hormone. Overproduction of which causes PCOS among women. PCOS is difficult to detect as the symptoms are quite varied and hence more women need to be educated about it.

Causes

PCOS is most likely linked with your genes and is passed on hereditarily. If the women in your family suffered from PCOS, you are likely to develop it. Another major cause of PCOS is insulin resistance. Insulin is responsible for the blood sugar levels in a body and being insulin resistant contributes towards the development of PCOS. If you are insulin resistant, certain organs are resistant to insulin and hence more insulin than the regular is required to maintain the blood sugar levels at a standard rate. This inevitably also affects your ovaries, mainly your hormone and egg production. Over 80% of women with PCOS are found to be insulin resistant. PCOS causes also include being obese.

Symptoms

The four basic aspects of life which show the signs of PCOS are fertility and menstrual health, hair and skin, psychological effects and changing sleeping patterns. They can be further described as:

  • Imbalance in the menstrual cycle: Even if women with PCOS have regular periods, the overproduction of hormones like androgen and insulin affect the monthly cycle of periods and ovulation. Some may experience no periods at all, irregular periods, periods lasting for days or shortened period cycle. Some women may even experience eight or fewer period cycles a year or their menstrual cycle may last for more than 35 days.
  • Infertility:  If the period cycle is lengthy, your ovulation process might stop altogether. This affects your fertility and the chances of you getting pregnant lower profusely. Irregular or immature eggs which never ovulate, multiple cysts on the ovaries are other symptoms which contribute towards this difficulty of getting pregnant.
  • Acne: If you suffer from PCOS, the oil production in your skin increases which causes acne.
  • Other symptoms of PCOS include hair fall, excess hair on unwanted parts like face, chin, upper lips and even on chest and thighs. Depression and anxiety are some psychological symptoms associated with PCOS.
