Psoriasis gets worse in summer?

The phrase “the heartbreak of psoriasis” is often used to describe the emotional impact of the psoriasis skin condition. Summer can be a double-edged sword for those who have psoriasis. While sunlight and humidity help in soothing psoriasis symptoms, air conditioning, and chlorine can dry out the skin and trigger flare-ups.

Humidity is beneficial for the skin as the excess moisture makes psoriasis patches less prone to skin cracking and scaling. However, the warm weather coupled with activities like running, hiking or swimming, may trigger a flare.

Summer tips for psoriasis sufferers

Sun exposure can be wonderful for psoriasis, but this doesn’t mean it should be limitless. Excessive sun exposure can also lead to sunburn. The length of time you should spend in the sun depends on the location of your flares and the type of psoriasis you have (plaque, erythrodermic, guttate, etc.). For the best direction on timing, you need to consult your skin doctor.

Make sure to apply sunscreen or sunblock on all the exposed skin areas, including psoriasis plaque. This will prevent sunburn, which may worsen your psoriasis. Talk to your dermatologist about sunscreen advice for your psoriasis. Look for a sunscreen that:

  • Has a “broad spectrum” on the label, showing that it protects against UVA and UVB rays
  • Has 30 or greater SPF

Is fragrance-free and made for sensitive skin

How to live with psoriasis in summers?

Here are some tips to manage psoriasis during the summers so that you can enjoy yourself all season long.

  • Go swimming

Swimming in salt water can help remove dead skin; this improves the look of psoriasis. However, both chlorinated water and saltwater from swimming pools can leave your skin dry and flaky. After swimming, make sure to rinse off and moisturize yourself.

  • Wear breathable clothing

Clothes made of breathable fabrics, like cotton, are best during the summers. Consider wearing long pants and sleeves to protect the skin from the sun and wearing light colors, as they absorb less heat.

  • Stay cool

Try to stay cool by using a fan or an air-conditioner as excessive sweat can trigger psoriatic flares. However, air conditioning can also dry out the skin. Use a moisturizer regularly when you are often in air-conditioned cars or rooms.

  • Be prepared

If planning to go on a vacation, there are things you can do to prepare for your trip as a precautionary measure. Be sure to pack suitable clothing and enough of your prescription medicines and moisturizers. Speak with your skin doctor about prescription refills.

According to a case study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a 41yearold Indian male developed psoriasis on his whole body with a baseline 22.8 PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index) score. With classical homeopathic therapy, he achieved a 100% skin clearance indicator (PASI 100; showing complete skin clearance) in 3 months. His blood tests showed no inflammatory signs at the end of the treatment and for over 2 years the patient was monitored with no relapse.
