Skin problems often go more than just skin-deep. They affect the way we see ourselves and also how the world sees us. In such scenarios, watching your beautiful skin start to look scaly and covered with red patches can be a nightmare. This is the nightmare that most people suffering from Psoriasis go through daily.

According to the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA), over 125 million people have some form of psoriasis worldwide. It commonly affects individuals between 15 to 35 years of age, with men being affected twice as commonly as women. Psoriasis skin disease significantly impairs the quality of life of patients and their families resulting in great physical, emotional and social burdens.

We’re here to help you understand more about Psoriasis. Let’s start with getting to know more about the disease.

What is psoriasis?

Typically, our skin cells grow deep in the skin and slowly rise to the surface. Eventually, these cells fall off following a typical life cycle of one month. Psoriasis is an auto-immune condition that causes skin cells to multiply up to 10 times faster than normal.

The cause of psoriasis is the rapid buildup of these skin cells. This buildup of cells results in scaly skin. Psoriasis triggers include infections, stress and cold. Sometimes people inherit genes that make them more likely to develop psoriasis. Approximately 2% to 3% of people with the gene develop the condition, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF).

Did you know that there are 5 psoriasis types?

  1. Plaque psoriasis:

This is the most common type of psoriasis. In this form, the scaly skin is often covered with whitish-silver scales or plaques. These plaques are commonly found on the elbows, knees and scalp. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) estimates that about 80% of people with the condition have plaque psoriasis.

  1. Guttate psoriasis:

This psoriasis type commonly affects people during childhood and results in small pink spots. The most common sites for guttate psoriasis include the torso, arms, and legs.

  1. Pustular psoriasis:

This form of psoriasis causes white, pus-filled blisters and broad areas of red, inflamed skin. Pustular psoriasis is more common in adults and is typically localized to smaller areas of the body, such as the hands or feet.

  1. Inverse psoriasis:

This type typically develops under armpits or breasts, in the groin or around skin folds in the genitals forming bright areas of red, shiny, inflamed skin.

  1. Erythrodermic psoriasis:

This is a very severe and equally rare psoriasis type that covers large sections of the skin and often results in large sections or sheets of scaly skin to wear off. This can be life-threatening.

Psoriasis treatment with Homeopathy:

Conventional medicines include topical lotions and ointments which contain steroids. Treatments that include photo therapies like UV light therapy only solve the problem at the superficial level. They help suppress the symptoms and hence there is a higher chance of relapse.
