How to treat Lichen Planus?

Lichen planus is a condition that can cause irritation and swelling in the skin, nails and mucous membranes. On the skin, lichen planus usually appears as purplish, flat, itchy bumps that develop over several weeks. The mouth, vagina and some other areas of the body are covered by mucous membranes. Lichen planus forms lacy white patches in mucous membranes sometimes accompanied by painful sores. Lichen planus isn’t contagious. Most people can manage typical and mild cases of lichen planus at home, without medical care. But if the condition is accompanied by pain or significant itching, then you might need the help of a doctor.

Lichen Planus Symptoms

Some of the common lichen planus symptoms are as follows –

• Purplish or flat bumps
• Itching
• Blisters
• Hair loss
• Change in scalp color
• Nail damage or loss
• Painful sores in mouth or vagina
• Lacy white patches in the mouth or on the lips or tongue

It's advised to consult a doctor before the symptoms worsen so that the treatment is given at the proper time.

Diagnosis of Lichen Planus

Your doctor will make a diagnosis of lichen planus based on your symptoms, a physical examination, your medical history, and the results of lab tests. These tests may include –

• Biopsy
• Allergy tests
• Hepatitis C test

Other tests may be needed, if the doctor suspects you to have any other variations of lichen planus, such as the type that affects the ears, mouth, genitals, or esophagus.
