Can vitiligo be cured with diet and supplements?

One of the most frequent questions asked by people suffering from vitiligo disease and their families is about the role of diet in their vitiligo treatment. In a hope to get the queries resolved, they resort to the internet about how special diets, vitamins, and other supplements cure vitiligo, and others to avoid, as they supposedly make vitiligo worse. For example, there is a long-standing belief that drinking milk soon after eating fish can cause vitiligo disease. Adopting a gluten-free diet helps in reducing vitiligo symptoms. Are these facts right? Let us find out.

Firstly, let us understand how vitiligo occurs - A pigment called melanin imparts skin (and hair) with its native colour. This pigment is produced in cells called 'melanocytes'. When melanocytes die or are unable to function, it results in the loss of melanin, causing colourless, white patches on the skin, leading to vitiligo. It is important to note that every off-white or white patch on the skin is not vitiligo. There are many other causes of white patches, namely, fungal infection, birthmarks, inflammatory conditions of the skin, etc. Vitiligo is just one of the causes of white skin patches. Hence, if you notice any skin changes after consuming particular foods, not necessary, it is a vitiligo patch. It may signal other skin problems or allergies, which needs immediate medical attention.

Secondly, some people believe that vitiligo disease can be aggravated by consuming milk or other white foods, while few others think that eating sour foods such citrus fruits (lemons, limes and oranges) increase its spread. This is certainly not true. Vitiligo is an auto-immune disease which has no direct relation to food. Therefore, avoiding certain foods will have absolutely no impact on the progression of the condition.

Last but not the least, there are misconceptions regarding vitiligo cure. For example, some people adopt a gluten-free diet and others claim that drinking water out of copper vessels is beneficial for vitiligo. Some take vitamins like vitamin B12 and vitamin D in the hope that they will improve their vitiligo condition. There are no scientific proofs to state such practices. Therefore, it is always better to get a clear understanding of the disease and its medical treatments rather than believing in myths.

Conclusion: Due to lack of proper knowledge and existing myths around this disease, people feel embarrassed and avoid going to the doctor. As a result, they deprive themselves of proper treatment.

So, how can you treat vitiligo? Homeopathy has an answer to it.

As vitiligo is an auto immune disorder, homeopathic medicines provide a comprehensive and effective treatment by moderating the immune system. It primarily aims at stopping or slowing down the further destruction of melanocytes and stimulating re-pigmentation in the existing patches. It thus targets the root cause of the ailment, which results in providing a long-term solution for the disorder.
