Female Pattern Baldness
September 29, 2020 , Last updated: September 6, 2024

“Where is my voluptuous pony tail? Why is it thinning every day?” Are these thoughts running through your mind too? Well, thinning hair may be a sign of female pattern baldness.

Although baldness is found more commonly among men, women also experience it. In fact, in a study conducted on 1004 women, 46% of them had female pattern baldness. (Source: Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venerology and Leprology)

What is female pattern baldness?

Female pattern baldness is a type of androgenetic alopecia. If you have this condition, you’ve inherited it from your family. If we dissect the words, ‘androgenic’ means genes and ‘alopecia’ means hair fall.

Difference between male and female pattern baldness

In female pattern hair loss, your hair becomes thin throughout the scalp but the hairline usually remains whole. However, a receding hairline is one of the biggest outcomes of male pattern baldness.

Another difference is that women with female pattern baldness cannot go completely bald. Such isn’t the case with men experiencing male pattern baldness.

Three stages of female pattern baldness:

  • Small amounts of hair thinning around your parting
  • Widening hair parting in a “Christmas tree pattern”
  • Thinning hair at an alarming rate. As a result, you may even notice a see-through area on top of your scalp.

Other early signs of female pattern baldness

The most apparent sign of female pattern baldness is severe hair fall. You may notice more strands than usual in your shower drain, combs and pillow cases. According to American Association of Dermatologists, approximately 55-100 strands of hair fall per day can be considered normal. Anything beyond that can be alarming. Some women may also notice facial hair.

Risk factors associated with female pattern baldness:

  • Aging
  • Family history of male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness
  • Oral contraceptive pills
  • Crash dieting
  • Nutrition, vitamin and iron deficiency

Is it just a cosmetic problem?

Unfortunately, many people assume that hair fall is merely a cosmetic problem. But female pattern baldness is a medical problem which may occur due to many various problems. Some of them include:

  • Thyroid problems:

An overreacting or underactive thyroid gland causes hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism respectively. These changing levels of hormones causes hair fall.

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome:

This is a hormonal disorder which increases the androgen levels in your body obstructing the hair growth on your scalp.

  • Emotional stress:

Life events like pregnancy, childbirth or recovering from prolonged illness, psychological trauma and significant weight loss may cause stress further leading to hair loss.

  • Metabolic disorders:

Conditions like hypertension and high blood cholesterol can be responsible for hair loss.

  • Medications:

Antidepressants or chemotherapy medicines are some other reasons for your hair fall.

  • Menopause:

Due to the increase in male hormones named androgens, women approaching menopause may experience hair fall.

So, if you are suffering from female pattern baldness, we recommend you stop going to a beauty parlour and visit an expert trichologist instead.
