While social media keeps us more updated on the happenings in people’s lives and we all vie for views and likes, we often don’t meet IRL (In real life) for years. Is that why India is considered the most depressed country in the world? And also the reason that our country has the highest suicide rates for young people?

Today most Indians travel intra-city for work or often move away from homes and family to pursue their dreams of ‘life in the big city’. The hustle and bustle of the city, constant deadlines and commute times can make meeting friends seem impossible. Due to this isolation from real life connections they often develop depression due to loneliness.

The sudden change in lifestyles can often be overwhelming and having a social life doesn’t mean you have a support system.

So how does one tackle the issue of depression?

One of the biggest challenges in dealing with patients of depression is that they do not want to be treated. Although most of India’s young urban population is educated and suitably employed, they often shy away from admitting that they have a problem. They are often forced into medical consultation by family members.  They have lost their will to fight and often to live.

When dealing with depression, the first thing one needs to do is to acknowledge that depression is an actual medical condition. Most often people believe that the feelings of anxiety, erratic moods and lethargy are due to their stressful lives. While some cases of depression are endogenous or internal, most cases are exogenous and result from external circumstances. And these feelings of anxiety, erratic moods / mood swings, listlessness are all symptomatic of deeper issues if left untreated could lead to chronic and severe depression.

Preferred Solution

Given its intuitive, holistic mind-body approach, Homeopathy is the ideal choice of treatment. It offers safe, natural and customized plans for patients of depression. Studies confirm that homeopathic remedies treat depression effectively and without any side-effects.

How homeopathy works

It does not merely look at the symptoms, because no two patients of depression present with the same set of symptoms-while one patient may feel sad and withdrawn, another may develop suicidal thoughts. Instead, Homeopathy goes to the root of the problem. While it cannot change the circumstances causing the condition, what it can and does do is to help alter reactions to that circumstance.

Eg

  • If depression occurs from a recent disappointment in love, the medicine Ignatia may be used.
  • If depression results from long-lasting grief, Natrum Mur is suggested.
  • If depression results from procrastination, Staphysagria is often used.

Along with homeopathy, here are some simple steps to dealing with depression:

•        Step One: Routine. Considering most people going through depression have lost their will to fight. It is important to set yourself small goals to achieve, even something as easy as wake up, make bed, have a good breakfast

•        Step 2: Do not self-medicate, as it can cause severe adverse reactions and dangerous drug interactions.

•        Step 3: Find a support group.  It is important to ensure you have people around you that know about your ailment and can help.

•        Step 4: A good therapist. It is vital that you find someone you can speak to that is qualified and trust worthy

•        Step 5: Exercise. It releases happy hormones called endorphins that help you feel better. 30 minutes of moderately intense aerobic exercise, 5 days a week works wonders.

•        Step 6: Sleep well. Depression can make it hard to get enough sleep.

So turn off the lights, avoid keeping the television on and use blackout curtains or an eye mask to block out the light to get better sleep.

•        Step 7: Say No to Negativity. It is important to be aware of negative thoughts that enter your mind and to consciously keep them away from you.

And you can help yourself and your loved ones come out of that black pool of depression.
