The importance of thyroid health

These days, you hear so much about diabetes and heart disease – the rising incidence of both and the terrible toll they’re taking on our nation’s health and economy. But there’s another condition that affects even more Indians: thyroid disease. According to a study, approximately 1 in 10 Indian adults suffer from hypothyroidism. The problem is many people don’t even know they have it.

Before you shrug it off as being less serious than heart disease or less bothersome than diabetes, consider this: having thyroid problems actually elevates your risk for both heart disease and diabetes. These are just two reasons why thyroid health is important.

Having a healthy thyroid

Good thyroid health has numerous implications for your health and happiness. A healthy thyroid makes it easier for you to maintain your body weight, keeps depression at bay, and gives your cells the energy they need for all the activities you do. The proper amount of thyroid hormones is also essential for menstrual regularity, pregnancy, and the delivery of a healthy baby.

An unhealthy thyroid, on the other hand, can cause problems as diverse as dry hair, difficulty concentrating, and muscle aches. It can make you perpetually uneasy, constantly exhausted, and sweaty for no good reason. In short, the thyroid gland affects virtually every aspect of your health and well-being.

You may wonder how anyone could have a thyroid problem and not know it

It’s simple. Many people with thyroid disease are being treated for their symptoms instead, especially if their TSH levels are only borderline abnormal. So rather than being properly treated for a thyroid problem, they’re being given medicines for specific symptoms. For example, an anti-depressant for depression, a sleeping pill for insomnia, and stool softeners for constipation.

For many people, treatment for the underlying thyroid disorder could correct all these symptoms – and even some that you might not know are associated with thyroid disease, such as high cholesterol. That’s why good thyroid health is so vital.

How to keep your thyroid in good health?

The key to staying well is knowledge. You need to know what to do in order to be healthy. Here are a few tips that you can adapt in your lifestyle to keep your thyroid in good health -

Watch what you eat:

  • Iodine is crucial for the production of thyroid hormones. Even a minute amount of iodine is sufficient for the normal production of thyroid hormones. However, there are foods that block iodine absorption (goitrogens) like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, mustard greens, and turnip that can nullify the benefits of iodised salt. Therefore, avoid eating excessive of these foods.
  • Dietary vegetable oils, polyunsaturated oils and hydrogenated fats are believed to be the cause for the increased incidence of thyroid problems. The most common source of hydrogenated fats and polyunsaturated oils are soybeans.
  • Avoid excessive consumption of strong tea, coffee, and tobacco.

Your lifestyle:

  • Manage your stress levels. Chronic stress slows down your metabolism level and impairs thyroid function at different levels.
  • Cigarette smoke has various toxins (thiocyanate, in particular) that are especially dangerous to thyroid, and can trigger thyroid disease in susceptible people. Cigarette smokers are also more likely to develop thyroid eye complications of Graves’ disease, and treatments for eye problems are less effective in smokers.
  • Regular exercise is crucial. Exercise not only enables weight-loss but also releases ‘happy hormones’ in the body reducing stress and helping you cope with low moods and depression.

Supplementation:

  • Vitamin D deficiency is linked to thyroid as well. Experts suggest that adequate bone-building nutrients such as vitamin D are particularly important during and after treatment. Foods that contain vitamin D include dairy, eggs and mushrooms. Sunlight is a potential source, but the amount of vitamin production depends on the season and latitude. Ideally, you need 60,000 Iu of Vitamin D a month.
  • Iodine and Selenium deficiency should be recovered from food. Iodine-rich foods like organic yogurt, seafood, organic potatoes and eggs and selenium rich foods like sunflower seeds, oats, chicken, salmon and tuna fish should be included in diet. Significant deficiency requires supplementation.

Early detection is key:

If you are diagnosed with thyroid problems, it is best advised to take an individualized treatment for your condition. Homeopathy offers great scope in the thyroid treatment for several reasons. The medicine is selected according to your mental state and other physical characteristics. Homeopathy is a personalized treatment option for thyroid problems as it treats each case as unique because the degree of symptoms and disturbance of emotions may vary from case to case.
