What is the onset of lichen planus?

Lichen planus is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune disease that affects the skin, genital mucosa, oral mucosa, scalp and nails. Lichen planus can appear at any age. But in most cases, it is seen that it appears between the age of 30 to 60 years. (Source: American Academy of Family Physicians)

The onset of lichen planus skin usually affects the flexor surfaces (the skin on the side of a joint that folds) of the wrists, legs and forearms. The lesions are often covered by reticular, lacy, white lines known as Wickham striae. Lichen skin may resolve within a timeline for about one to two years. But the chances of recurrences appear often.

Lichen planus is not contagious but it is always better to consult a doctor before the symptoms get worse. Some of the common lichen planus symptoms are as follows –

• Itching
• Change in scalp colour
• Blisters
• Lacelike white patches in the mouth, lips, or tongue
• Nail damage or loss
• Purplish, flat bumps
• Painful sores in mouth or vagina
• Crusting
• Hair loss

Lichen planus occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks the skin cells or the mucous membranes. It is still not clear as to why this happens but lichen planus can trigger by factors such as –

• Chemicals, metals or pigments
• Hepatitis C infection
• Flu vaccine
• Pain relievers such as ibuprofen and naproxen

Certain medications are taken for high blood pressure, arthritis, or heart diseases
