The panic is real and palpable when you notice the strands of hair on your pillow, sink and your hands when you shower. Hair loss affects both men and women and it can seriously hamper one’s self-esteem and confidence.

Let’s talk about what is hair loss? Losing 50 to 100 hair strands a day is considered normal and usually new hair replaces the lost hair, but when new hair does not grow and the hairline starts to recede that is when the problems begin.

Hair loss may be a common problem but it does not mean that you should take it lightly. To understand this better let’s, look at some of the causes of hair loss

  1. Heredity: Male Pattern Baldness or Female Pattern Baldness is the most common cause of hair loss in men and women. The progressive disorder is hereditary and usually co-relates with age and it happens in recognizable patterns. Receding hairline and thinning of hair are visual cues of patterned baldness.
  2. Autoimmune disorders: Autoimmune disorders like Alopecia Areata, in which the immune system send signals to the WBCs to attack healthy hair follicles which results in hair fall. In most cases the hair loss happens in patches. However, the disorder can lead to complete loss of hair on the scalp (alopecia totalis) or in severe cases, the entire body (alopecia universalis).
  3. Anemia: Anemia is caused by iron deficiency in the blood which leads to low RBCs. Hair follicles are not able to grow properly due to the low levels of iron in blood. Hence, hair loss is one of the typical symptoms of anemia.
  4. Nutritional deficiency: Deficiency of vitamins and minerals like B3, B7, Zinc and essential fatty acids like alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) which help in maintaining healthy hair also lead to hair loss.
  5. Medical disorders: Thyroid Disorders, Diabetes and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome are some of the underlying causes of hair loss. Your doctor can diagnose the underlying problem if you have been experiencing hair loss.
  6. Stress: Physical or emotional stress can lead to hair loss. Though stress does not usually start hair fall as a direct cause, it can act as a catalyst to an already underling problem.
  7. Medication: Blood thinners, Anti-depressants & other medicines have hair loss as a side-effect and other medical procedures like chemotherapy & radiation can lead to serious hair loss in men and women.
  8. Trichotillomania: Trichotillomania is a psychological disorder, in which the patients develop a tendency to pull out their own hair, leading to hair loss.

Hair loss can be due to multiple reasons and your doctor can best diagnose your root cause. Once the diagnosis is done there are multiple ways to treat the condition depending on the diagnosis. However, most of the treatment methods come with a variety of side-effects and the chances of relapsing are high as well.
