We all must have heard about steroids. If not then let us first know what is a steroid? A Steroid is a synthetic drug that closely resembles cortisol (a hormone that your adrenal glands produce naturally).

How does a steroid work?

A steroid works by decreasing inflammation and reducing the activity of the immune system. They are used to treat a variety of inflammatory diseases and conditions. Corticosteroids are different from anabolic steroids, which some athletes use to build bigger muscles. Anabolic steroids are drugs that mimic certain natural hormones in the body to regulate and control how the body works and develops. Anabolic steroids are often used illegally in order to stimulate muscle growth. This happens because they are similar to the male hormone testosterone. Taking the drug without the knowledge of a doctor can result in some side effects including possible hair loss. Synthetic steroids act like a natural steroid our body produces and it reduces inflammation and is available in many different forms such as tablets, injections, inhalers and lotions.

Why are steroids prescribed by an allopathic doctor?

When steroids are prescribed by an allopathic doctor, they are generally used to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system, and are typically used to treat conditions like asthma, atopic eczema, hay fever, multiple sclerosis, and Crohn’s disease. The steroids prescribed by a doctor are safe when taken in moderation.

Can steroids cause hair loss?

It is believed that steroids can increase the production of DHT. Male pattern baldness is primarily caused by producing too much of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT can cause the follicles to shrink in size and the hair produced will be weaker, and the follicles can eventually die; resulting in no hair growth and causing baldness. The use of a steroid speeds up the process of hair loss for men process if you are genetically prone to male pattern baldness. If you are prone to male pattern baldness you will have higher levels of DHT in your body. If you are experiencing hair loss as a result of consuming steroid it is advised that you discontinue the use of steroids as long term use can lead to permanent baldness, rather than temporary hair loss.
