VISION OVER VISIBILITY

SHANKAR CHANDRA SHEKAR

Age: 34 years

Location: Bengaluru, India

Medical condition: Visually-impaired

His story: Born visually-impaired, Shankar’s vision opened the world of technology to the differently-abled through his YouTube channel ‘Tech Accessibility Tutorials’. His distorted hands didn’t stop him from making technology accessible to all.

His struggle: Due to a lack of schools for children with special needs in their hometown, Shankar’s parents had to enrol him in a school in Bengaluru. Despite having a Diploma in Special Education he was unable to secure a job in the teaching sector.

His first step towards making a difference: Shankar saw technology as a boon for the differently-abled. However, owing to many reasons, access to technology for the differently-abled remains limited. With the vision to bridge this gap Shankar started a YouTube channel Tech Accessibility Tutorials.

His contribution to the society: Through his YouTube channel, Shankar is opening the world of technology for the differently-abled. It consists of videos that explain how to use important apps and features in one’s phone and computer with step-by-step instructions, which helps even the differently-abled people use the features to their benefit. In these times of digitization, Shankar’s efforts are a guiding light for others in a similar plight.
