ABILITY BEYOND DISABILITY

LATHEESHA ANSARI

Age: 25 years

Location: Kerala, India

Medical condition: Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Her story: Having suffered more than a 1,000 fractures due to a rare bone disorder called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, she makes no bones about it by putting up a brave fight every day. Despite being on oxygen support due to pulmonary hypertension, she turns into a beacon of light by teaching children with disabilities and aspires to be an IAS officer.

Her struggle: After being denied admission by several schools due to her condition, a school allowed her admission only on the condition that her father also accompanies her to the school. For 10 years her father accompanied her to school so she can get an education. They need to spend nearly Rs. 2000 on her medical expenses daily.

Her first step towards making a difference: Latheesha volunteers with an NGO named Amrithavarshini where she helps other children with Osteogenesis Imperfecta in their education.

Her contribution to the society: Understanding the struggle that she had to go through owing to her condition, Latheesha helps other children with disabilities get admissions in schools. Through her work with Amrithavarshini she becomes a symbol of hope for other differently-abled children.
