Cracked heels are a common problem. The skin at the edge of the heels thickens and develops cracks. Cracked heels often make people go ‘ouch’ the moment they step on the ground, especially after resting.

Anyone can suffer from cracked heels. Obese individuals who have to stand for long periods are at increased risk. The condition tends to also have an increased prevalence with advancing age.

It starts as thickening and hardening of the skin at the rim of the heels, which later develops into cracks. The cracks deepen over a period of time and, if this happens, there is pain while stepping on the ground. Bleeding may occur from the cracks, though this is not common. Some patients may also complain of itching.

A wide range of factors, from dry skin to open-back footwear, ill fitting shoes, or vitamin deficiency, can lead to cracked heels.

Diabetics with cracked heels are prone to develop infections on the feet due to the cracks. This can be difficult to treat because of nerve damage caused by high sugar levels. This is the reason why diabetics need to take good care of their feet and prevent cracked heels.

Skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis are other probable causes of cracked heels.

A look at the heels is usually enough to diagnose cracked heels. Besides this, the individual’s case history will suffice to understand what conditions precipitated its onset.

Homoeopathic Medicines for Cracked Heels

Depending on the season, physical appearance of a person e.g. obese / thin and associated complaints, homoeopathic medicines are prescribed for cracked heels.

Homoeopathic remedies are very mild and gentle and do not have any side-effects.

Cracked heels caused due to eczema or psoriasis is very effectively treated with Homoeopathy.

Recurrence of complaints is rare with homoeopathic medicines.

There are few specific medicines in homoeopathy which treat cracked heels very effectively. Depending on the season of aggravation of cracked heels like summer or winter the homoeopathic medicines are prescribed. When there is bleeding from cracked heels there is a different homoeopathic medicine is prescribed.

Self Help

Add oil to your bath water. This will help lock the moisture in your heels. Also, it will soothe and ease the cracks. After you take a bath or shower, pat your heels clean. While your skin is still damp, apply moisturizing cream. The moisturizer will help your heels retain water and stop them from becoming dry.

Soak your feet before going to bed. Mix half lukewarm water and half mineral oil. Make sure that the water is not too hot, because it can actually dry out your skin. Soak for approximately 10 minutes and massage your feet to make sure the oil enters the skin.

Apply moisturizer to your heels before you put socks on. This is soothing and comforting.
