Do you have a habit of pulling your hair?

Do you have a habit of pulling your hair?

Trichotillomania
September 8, 2017

Everybody plays with their hair while studying and so did he – this is what Sanchit thought. However, over a period of time, this had increased so much so that he could not stop himself from pulling his hair. This had resulted into an addiction. The more he tried to avoid it, the more the urge to pull. This habit of his had caused him to develop bald patches on the scalp.

Otherwise a cheerful, friendly, outspoken person, this condition had now made him subdued and anxious. He was not able to concentrate on his studies or routine works. A teenager who earlier enjoyed company and playing now feared socializing on account of his appearance and the attention that he received due to his bald patches and hair loss.

The severity of his hair loss complaint made him seek medical help. He had tried many medications for hair fall control in the past but nothing had helped him. This further added to his nervousness which in turn increased his desire to pull his hair and loose more of them. Around this time, coaxed by one of his friends, he decided to give homeopathy hair fall treatment a shot and his quest for a cure to his disease made him visit Dr Batra’s clinic.

At the clinic, he was first educated about his condition which is known as Trichotillomania. The doctor counseled him and put all his apprehensions to rest. Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder characterized by repeated urge to pull out one’s own scalp hair, eyelashes, facial hair, nose hair, pubic hair, eyebrows or other body hair, sometimes resulting in noticeable bald patches.

After a detailed case history and analysis, the consulting doctor prescribed him an appropriate homeopathic remedy based on his cheerfulness, anxiety, desire for travelling and other features. Along with this, he was advised to practice some kind of physical activity for stress-relief.

As the hair fall treatment progressed, his urge of pulling hair gradually reduced, he got his hair back and he got his own identity back. He no longer appears anxious and is his own cheerful self once again.

Why does this happen?

Chronic, or prolonged periods of stress like illness, divorce, death of a loved one, job loss, surgical stress, or accidents can trigger temporary hair loss. It can stop hair from growing. After a few months, the hair falls out and is not replaced.

Why does this happen? Severe stress can cause the growing hair follicles to prematurely move into the regression phase and, thereafter, the resting phase, during which the hair fall out uneventfully.

The shedding may not be apparent for the first few weeks; but, when it occurs suddenly, it becomes obvious. This may occur as a delayed response, so it is often a ‘hairy’ catch-22 situation for the person suffering from the condition.

What compounds the problem is the stressful event per se is often forgotten. It is also seldom connected with the ‘new’ dilemma - hair loss. The end result is a scalp showing hair loss.

Hair fall treatment in homeopathy

Homeopathy is by far the safest form of medical treatment for hair loss. Homeopathy is a mind-body medicine. Homeopathy not only treats the physical complaints but also targets the mind and gently restores the body-mind equilibrium - thus it treats the patient as a whole. This makes hair falling treatment in homeopathy an excellent solution for hair problems related to mind, such as stress related patchy loss of hair (alopecia areata), hair pulling disorder (trichotillomania) or stress induced massive hair shedding.

Homeopathic medicines are free from side-effects. Not only do homeopathic remedies reduce hair loss but they also protect the body from harmful effects such as decreased libido or ejaculation problems that are common with conventional drugs. Stress causes hormonal disturbances in the body like thyroid problems/ PCOS which are also known to cause hair loss and are very effectively treated with homeopathy.
