Biotin is a B-vitamin, also known as vitamin B7. Biotin is water-soluble, which means the body doesn't store it. It has many important functions in the body. Biotin plays an important role in maintaining the health of the nervous system, liver, eyes, skin, and hair.

The recommended intake is 5 mcg (micrograms) per day in infants and 30 mcg in adults. This goes up to 35 mcg per day in breastfeeding women.

Hair Health and Biotin

It is known that deficiency in biotin may lead to hair loss, which indicates that this vitamin is important for hair.

Biotin helps to increase hair growth and healthier, stronger hair. While it is often marketed as an alternative treatment for hair loss, only people with an actual biotin deficiency get significant benefit from supplementing.

Mechanism of Action of Biotin to Promote Hair Health

Biotin possesses rejuvenation characteristics which help the body to produce new cells. Biotin helps in preventing hair loss by rejuvenating both the hair follicles and scalp. This is highly beneficial in preventing shedding and also promotes hair regeneration.

Our bodies have the ability to manufacture Biotin, and that takes place in our intestines. However, taking Biotin alone shouldn’t be expected to promote hair growth.

What Biotin does is, it supports hair growth through metabolic function. Keratin is the building block of hair follicles and it’s formed from several amino acids.

Biotin plays its role in breaking down the dietary proteins into different amino acids required for the formation of keratin. Increasing keratin production in the body promotes the production of healthy hair follicles.

Biotin also prevents hair dryness and improves the elasticity of the cortex of the hair preventing the splitting and breakage of hair strands. This is why many split-end prevention products contain Biotin as an ingredient.

Dietary Sources and Reasons of Biotin Deficiency in the Body

Foods rich in Biotin include boiled eggs, liver, dark leafy vegetables, walnuts, green peas, sunflower seeds, soybean, brown rice, and oats.

Eating raw eggs may also cause a deficiency, but you would need to eat a lot of raw eggs for a very long time. Raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin, which binds to biotin and prevents its absorption.

Avidin is inactivated during cooking. It should be noted that high protein consumption, especially raw foodies and athletes who love their raw egg drinks in the morning, can decrease biotin assimilation. Antacids also prevent biotin absorption in the body. Hence, those people who use antacids excessively are more susceptible to develop Biotin deficiency.

Needless to say, since biotin is manufactured in the gut, anyone who has had surgery to remove the stomach will be prone to deficiency.

Homeopathy for Hair thinning and Hairfall… (This helps to control hairloss and treats the underlying factor)

  • Homeopathic medicines show a good long-term response in male and female patterned baldness.
  • Homeopathy is free from any side-effects. Not only do homeopathic medicines reduce hairloss but they also protect the body from harmful side-effects (such as decreased libido, ejaculation problems) that are common with conventional drugs.
  • Homeopathy is a holistic medicine and treats the patient as well as the pathology.  Hence thyroid, PCOS can be simultaneously treated in Homoeopathy without having 10 different medicines, unlike conventional medicines.
  • Stress in females which are the major cause hairloss can be very effectively treated with homeopathy.
  • Homeopathy treats not only all physical complaints but also targets the mind and gently restores mind-body equilibrium - thus it treats the patient as a whole.
  • Homeopathy has remedies such as Thuja Occidentalis and Sabal Serrulata which have been very effective in treating hair loss. These two homeopathic medicines are cited with natural DHT- inhibitor action i.e. they control hair loss caused by DHT without side-effects.
  • Hair lotions available in the market to control hair loss are very high in chemicals and can cause chemical burns on the scalp skin leading to permanent hair loss and scars in the affected areas.
  • Homeopathy has no such side-effects as the medicines are oral medicines.
