“What’s a big deal about washing and drying hair?” most people would ask. Lather, rinse and dry is all that you have to do. It may sound simple, but there are a lot of things that many people over or under-do, which causes more harm to your hair than help it stay healthy. Washing and drying your hair using incorrect methods can also lead to hair loss. Hair basics can make a huge difference in how your hair looks and feels. So, here we share with you some tips on how to wash and dry your hair the right way and control hair fall.

1. Wash Your Hair with Lukewarm to Cold Water - Wash your hair with lukewarm to cold water twice a week for dry hair, thrice a week for normal hair and daily for oily hair. Avoid hot water for hair, no matter how much you love it. Using hot water can cause hair to break and fall, thus causing hair loss.

2. Shampoo Right - Take a capful of shampoo on your palms and rub together. The best method of shampooing is to start with the scalp and roots and gently massage down along the shaft of the hair. Gently run fingers through the hair to make sure that the shampoo is evenly distributed, especially if you have thick hair. Rinse the shampoo by allowing the water to run from scalp to ends evenly.

3. Do Not Bunch or Squeeze Hair during Shampoo - This could be damaging since hair is fragile when wet and can easily break. This might lead to hair loss.

4. Rinsing - As you rinse your hair, you should feel lighter and cleaner. If not, then shampoo and rinse again. Once the hair is rinsed thoroughly, you are ready to condition

5. Conditioning - Apply the conditioner evenly over hair strands while avoiding its contact with the scalp. Wait for a few minutes. Rinse well. Conditioner replaces the moisture in the hair shaft. It serves as a source of protein which temporarily attaches to the hair, protecting hair strands from breakage, while aiding detangling and manageability

6. Drying - Allow the hair to dry naturally.

7. Avoid vigorous rubbing - Forceful rubbing with a towel is a big no, as this weakens hair roots, ‘pulls out’ hair and aggravates hair loss

8. If You Want to Use Blow Dryer to Dry Your Hair - Make sure to use it (cold) for not more than 4-5 minutes. Hold it at a distance of more than 6 inches from the scalp. Leave a little moisture on the hair in the end — do not burn out all the moisture

9. Combing - Never comb wet hair as hair is elastic when moist and can reach its breaking point easily. Brushing and combing wet hair only weaken the roots and leads to hair fall.  When hair is semi-dry or fully dried, use a wide-toothed comb. Avoid using a hair brush as it has a larger surface area; it can fracture the hair shaft causing hair fall. Wash your comb each time before you wash your hair to maintain scalp hygiene

10. Oiling Before a Shampoo - Hair oil acts as a moisturizer for the hair and scalp. It is advisable to apply oil at night before you shampoo the next morning. Avoid excessive oil application and keeping oil on for longer than for the night, as it attracts dust and grime, while rendering the hair difficult to clean.
