75% of individuals in Ahmedabad are unaware that hair loss ia a medical problem

Ahmedabad, In a survey undertaken in Ahmedabad by Dr Batra's® Healthcare, on perceptions and causes of hair fall has revealed that more than 75% of individuals do not believe that hair loss could be associated with serious medical problems and opt for cosmetic products, home remedies or salon treatments as solutions instead of seeking medical intervention. Whopping 98% women and 86% men believe that oiling hair makes it grow faster, while 96% women and 92% men believe that home remedies like egg mask, yogurt mask, henna, etc make hair healthy. The survey findings clearly demonstrate the lack of awareness that hair loss is a medical problem.

Commenting on the findings Dr. Akshay Batra, Managing Director and Vice Chairman, Dr Batra's Group of Companies, said "While it is customary to shed about 50-100 strands of hair a day, it could be a worrying symptom when hair appears to fall in clumps. Hair loss can predict a more serious underlying disease and can have various medical triggers including flu or fever, jaundice, typhoid, malaria. Hair fall could also be symptomatic of other serious ailments such as thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalances, ovarian cysts, anaemia, diabetes or even heart diseases.

" He further added that, "Studies suggest that hair starts thinning several weeks before diabetes mellitus is detected. Hair loss, likewise, can imply a three-fold in-creased risk of heart disease, especially in men, thus it is critical to recognize and acknowledge hair loss as a medical condition, rather than resigning to it as a cosmetic, superficial symptom."(19-8)
