Dr Batra’s plans foray into hair dye segment

Dr Batra’s, a multispecialty chain of homeopathy clinics, is bracing for an entry into hair dyes and colours as part of its recent decision to diversify into flourishing segments that will complement growth in its bead-and-butter hair-treatment and skincare treatment business.

The hair dye segment is dominated by Godrej and includes other players such as Vasmol and Cavincare, but is growing at 25% annually. The hair colour segment has global companies such as Garnier and L’Oreal, but together with hair dyes is worth Rs 580 crore. The overall hair care market is more than Rs 5,000 crore.

“We want to get the right product in the market and would not like to put ourselves into the ‘me too’ category,” Dr Batra’s chief operating officer Hari Nair.

The company is presently carrying out an extensive market research, and based on the study will decide the contours of the launch. The company may either outsource production or manufacture on its own. Mr. Nair said it’s too early to comment on pricing.

Though the target will be the urban market, the company will add value to products in terms of medicinal value. Dr Batra’s, said Mr Nair, believes that this aspect is yet to be catered to by products flooding the market. The current hair dyes contains chemicals like ammonia and hydrogen peroxide.
